Civil Air Patrol Day

Civil Air Patrol Day is observed in the United States on December 1 each year. This important historical holiday honors the bravery and dedication of the Civil Air Patrol’s volunteer pilots and crews who have defended our nation and saved countless lives.

History

In 1936, American pilot Gill Robb Wilson returned from observing aviation developments in Germany and warned of looming conflict. His proposal to organize civilian aviators received unanimous support, and the first Civil Air Reserve unit was established in Ohio in 1938. As World War II intensified and German U-boats menaced the Atlantic coast, the Civil Air Patrol began coastal patrols, search-and-rescue missions, and anti-submarine operations. Their efforts saved lives and protected shipping lanes at great personal risk.

Interesting Facts

  • By the end of World War II, Civil Air Patrol volunteers had flown over 500,000 hours on coastal patrols and rescue missions.
  • The Civil Air Patrol lost 60 members and 90 aircraft during wartime operations.
  • Both men and women served as pilots, radio operators, and ground crew, performing voluntary search-and-rescue and medical missions.
  • In 1948, Congress officially designated the Civil Air Patrol as the Air Force’s civilian auxiliary.
