Bell Bottoms Day

Bell Bottoms Day is an American holiday dedicated to flared pants. The popularity of this closet element is always held high, and loved by many (usually) women. The distinctive features are the expansion of pants from the knees to the ankles, which makes them similar in shape to a bell. It is celebrated annually on April 5.

The story behind the creation of Bell Bottoms Day is not known. Apparently, the connoisseurs of fashion decided to consolidate the success of the flared pants by creating a holiday. Thus, every year people get a unique opportunity to remember the history of these pants and, of course, to complement their closet!

It is believed that the flared pants were originally a sailor’s uniform used by members of the U.S. and Macedonian navies. Stephen Decater described their appearance in 1813 as follows: stiff-flared hats of sailcloth with ribbons, jackets of blue under which the vests and blue flared pants were concealed.

In the 19th century, the pants were a distinctive feature of the Royal Navy, but somewhat later became popular with members of royal families as well. The popularity in society of the pants flared existed in the 70s of the 20th century, after which their fashion passed. However, in the 20s of the 21st century we can see how the fashion for these pants (most often jeans) is actively returning.

Interesting facts

  • In today’s world, Navy pants are simply wide pants, but they continue to be traditionally called flared pants.
