July 4 is celebrated annually as Alice in Wonderland Day, honoring the day when Lewis Carroll first told Alice Liddell the story that would become his most beloved work. The tale about a young girl who falls into a fantastical world has captivated millions of readers since its inception. This day provides an opportunity to learn more about Lewis Carroll and the origins of his iconic book, Alice in Wonderland.
History
Lewis Carroll, whose real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, was born in Cheshire, England, as the third child and eldest son in his family. Despite suffering from a stutter that affected his confidence, he pursued his education at home, developing a love for literature through books like The Pilgrim’s Progress. Later, he attended Rugby School and Oxford University, where he studied mathematics and later became a teacher. While pursuing his academic career, Carroll also wrote poems and short stories, many of which were published in magazines.
In 1856, Henry Liddell became the Dean of Christ Church, bringing his family, including daughters Alice, Lorina, and Edith. Carroll formed a friendship with the Liddell family, often taking the children on boat trips along the Thames. During one such outing, the children asked him to tell a story about a heroine named Alice. The tale was so captivating that the children requested it repeatedly, inspiring Carroll to write and publish Alice in Wonderland. In 1864, he presented Alice Liddell with a handwritten copy of the story.
