History
Lewis Carroll’s real name is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was born in the English county of Cheshire, the third child and eldest son. He suffered from a stutter that greatly interfered with his life, was educated at home, and liked to read books like The Pilgrim’s Progress. Later, he entered Rugby School, after which he went to Oxford University, where he received an education in mathematics. While working as a teacher, Lewis kept his passion for literature and wrote poems and stories that were published in magazines.
In 1856, Henry Liddell became Dean of Christ Church, bringing with him a family with three daughters – Alice, Lorina, and Edith. A friendship developed between the writer and the Liddells; they often went on boat trips on the Thames. During one of these, the girls asked Carroll to tell them a story about a heroine named Alice. The children liked this tale so much, they later asked him to tell it again and again, which prompted him to publish Alice in Wonderland. In 1864, Lewis presented Alice Liddell with a copy of the published book.
