World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is a worldwide holiday dedicated to the information and technological progress of society. Today we can easily communicate with people around the world, and all the necessary information can be easily found on the Internet. The holiday is celebrated every year on May 17.

History

The history of the W.T.I.S.D. begins in 1969. It was originally dedicated to the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. In its modern form, the holiday appeared in 2006 with the initiative of the UN General Assembly. The I.T.U. conference advocated for this day.

I.T.U.’s field of activity is enormous. The organization is responsible for the spread of information communications around the world: new cellular towers are installed, Internet cables are laid to the remotest points of the globe, educational institutions of various levels are equipped with modern computers, etc. All people should have equal opportunities for access to information.

  • The I.T.U. consists of representatives from 193 states and has about 1,000 of its own units, companies and even universities.
  • Wireless technology for transmitting information (Bluetooth) appeared in 1998. The following year the first device using this technology appeared.
  • Today about 65% of educational institutions around the world do not have an adequate level of provision with modern devices (computers, projectors, etc.).
