Refired Not Retired Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to all people who have retired. It’s a great time to learn new things and live life to the fullest. You should not think of retirement as the arrival of old age and the end of an active life. It’s just getting started! The holiday is celebrated annually on March 1.

History

The establishment of Refired Not Retired Day came about in the early 2000s, thanks to a woman named Phyllis May. At 55, I had an unplanned retirement. She didn’t want to, but life events changed her plans. She went through a divorce from her husband, her daughter moved out of her house after going to college, and the woman also had to put her sick dog to sleep.

Phyllis decided not to give up and start all over again. It was on March 1, 1998 that she moved to Key West, which is in Florida. She was literally reborn: she found new acquaintances and friends, worked as a maid, a sales clerk, did not refuse the dirtiest work. As a result, she found her calling by creating a television show and later publishing a book based on her personal experience, Keys to Paradise…a fun guide to Key West. The woman wanted her example to inspire other retirees. The creation of Refired Not Retired Day fully continues her endeavors, spreading the message in the community that retirement is just the beginning of a new life.

• The first pensions, as we are used to, appeared at the end of the 19th century in Germany, under Chancellor Bismarck.
• In China, old-age pensions are paid only to military, police, and government employees. The rest must be supported in their old age by their children.
• Psychologists have noted that people who have found any hobby in retirement (knitting, playing table tennis, chess, etc.), feel much happier than others.
