International Book Giving Day

International Book Giving Day is a holiday that appeared only seven years ago. It began to be celebrated in America, but soon gained popularity around the world, including Russia. On this day, everyone who loves to read can exchange books. Mass events are held in children’s and adult libraries and in bookstores.

History

The holiday began to be celebrated seven years ago. It was invented by an American boy. His idea was to put a day on the calendar where people could exchange books with each other. Americans liked the idea very much, and so an interesting and unusual holiday appeared.

Interesting facts

  • The holiday is very popular among children and all lovers of children’s books.
  • The tradition of exchanging books on this day is observed in many American schools and kindergartens.
  • Bookstores often arrange promotions and sales on this day, as well as meetings with interesting people – authors of popular books.

How to celebrate

Celebrating this day is very simple. It is enough to look through all the books in the home library and choose those that are in good condition, but no one is interested in (for example, it can be children’s books if the children are already grown). After that, you can give books to anyone, for example, a neighbor or relative. If there is no one to give them to, you can take them to the library, school or orphanage.

On this day, thematic meetings are held in many book clubs, at which people discuss books read, exchange opinions. People who are fond of books are called bibliophiles (book lovers). Bibliophiles can devote this day to reading or searching for new books in their favorite store. Parents with children can exchange children’s books.

By the way, in many schools and kindergartens in the United States there is a special room in which a student can bring any book read so that other children can read it. Children bring their own books, and in return take other people’s, so as not to buy interesting books, but just to rent them.  This tradition allows you to save money and instill in school-age children a love of reading, which is very important in the modern world.
