World Whisky Day celebrates the popularity and culture of whiskey drinking. The day’s festivities are dedicated to whiskey lovers around the world.
History
Whiskey was first mentioned in 1405, with the drink originally made by Irish monks. Some sources, however, claim it was first made on June 1, 1494. The name translates to “living water,” and whiskey began its journey as a type of beer. In 1579, the Scottish Parliament banned whiskey production for those of low birth. Over time, different types of whiskey and a whole culture surrounding its consumption developed.
It is believed that the first World Whisky Day celebrations took place in 2012 at the initiative of Blair Bowman, a Scotsman famous for always carrying a pocket whiskey guide. The holiday is observed on the third Saturday in May. Additionally, there is International Whisk(e)y Day, observed on March 27th. The purpose of World Whisky Day is to introduce as many people as possible to this elite drink and the culture that surrounds it.
