World Heritage Day is a global celebration of cultural heritage. There are hundreds of cultures on our planet with ancient histories. Over time, these cultures have created monuments, temples, palaces, paintings, and more. We must cherish all of this: those who destroy culture erase their own history and lose their humanity. The holiday is celebrated annually on April 18.
History
We have ICOMOS to thank for the creation of World Heritage Day. It initiated this day in 1982, and since then, it has been celebrated annually. The main focus of ICOMOS is the preservation of monuments and sites for future generations.
The organization often sponsors the renovation or repair of historic buildings and structures to keep them in good condition. Without proper care, these sites would deteriorate due to natural factors. In addition, the organization helps to organize museum exhibitions where visitors can view historical relics from different periods.
Interesting Facts
- ICOMOS works closely with UNESCO.
- One of the most popular examples of cultural heritage is the Egyptian pyramids. In a survey, more than 80% of respondents immediately named them.
