Save the Koala Day is celebrated every September 30 and is part of Save the Koala Month, established by the Australian Koala Foundation. The mission of the holiday is simple and noble – to save these amazing animals and help increase their population.
History
Unfortunately, today koalas are under the threat of extinction, so it is important for society to unite, raise awareness about these animals, and save and increase their natural habitats. The main causes of extinction are human activity and climate change. The holiday was first celebrated in 1986; it was founded by two veterinarians, but gradually the number of people wishing to join this noble mission increased.
Interesting Facts
- In 2012, koalas were officially recognized as endangered.
- The Australian authorities have long been reluctant to admit the symbol of the continent is in danger, but veterinarian Deborah Tabart provided indisputable evidence that the government is not able to provide adequate protection to these animals.
- Today, the Australian Koala Foundation is taking the initiative to develop legislation aimed at protecting koalas, similar to the laws that protect bald eagles in the United States.
How to take part
