Salvation Army Founders’ Day

Salvation Army Founders Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to the Salvation Army. Today, it is a large-scale Christian organization focused on helping people in need and engaging in charitable activities. The holiday is observed on April 10.

History

The story of Salvation Army Founders Day is closely connected to a man named William Booth. Booth’s childhood in Nottingham was marked by financial difficulties in his family. At the age of 15, he became interested in religion, honed his skills in writing and oratory, and eventually became a local preacher. After his studies, he worked for a moneylender, and in 1851, he joined the Methodist Reformed Church.

In 1855, Booth married Catherine Mumford, and 10 years later, together they organized the Christian Mission, which in 1878 was renamed the Salvation Army. The organization extends help to anyone in need, regardless of their worldview or religious beliefs. Booth made great efforts to combat discrimination in society.

Today, the Salvation Army has over 1.5 million members worldwide.

Interesting Facts

  • The Christian organization oversees charity stores, rehabilitation centers for adults (including those recovering from alcohol and drug addiction), and Hadleigh Farm in Essex, where unemployed men can work and learn necessary skills. About 70% of them later find employment.
