History

The establishment of Refired Not Retired Day came about in the early 2000s, thanks to a woman named Phyllis May. At 55, she had an unplanned retirement. She didn’t want to, but life events changed her plans. She went through a divorce from her husband, her daughter moved out of her house after going to college, and she also had to put her sick dog to sleep.

Phyllis decided not to give up and start all over again. It was on March 1, 1998, that she moved to Key West, Florida. She was literally reborn: she found new acquaintances and friends, worked as a maid and a sales clerk, and did not refuse the dirtiest work. As a result, she found her calling by creating a television show and later publishing a book based on her personal experience, *Keys to Paradise…a fun guide to Key West*. She wanted her example to inspire other retirees. The creation of Refired Not Retired Day continues her endeavors, spreading the message in the community that retirement is just the beginning of a new life.
