July 5th is National Graham Cracker Day, celebrating the famous crackers that make great meals. Graham crackers were originally invented as a healthy alternative to other foods. The recipe for this treat included cereals, wholegrain flour, and bran, but later sugar, honey, cinnamon, and chocolate were also added to it.
History
National Graham Cracker Day is dedicated to crackers that have a very interesting origin. Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham invented the lightly sweetened cracker as a health food in the 1800s as part of his diet program. Graham believed that, with the help of his crackers, people could curb the sinful cravings of gluttony and lust. But soon the cracker became popular on its own, outside the priest’s diet, and the recipe was modified and changed many times.
Interesting Facts
