July 5th is National Graham Cracker Day, celebrating famous crackers making great meals. Graham crackers were originally invented as a healthy alternative to other foods. The recipe for this treat included cereals, wholegrain flour, and bran, but later sugar, honey, cinnamon, and chocolate were also added to it.
National Graham Cracker Day is dedicated to crackers that have a very interesting origin. Presbyterian minister Sylvester Graham invented the lightly sweetened cracker as a health food in the 1800s as part of his diet program. Graham believed, with the help of his crackers, people can curb the sinful cravings of gluttony and lust. But suddenly the cracker became popular on its own, outside the priest’s diet, and the recipe was modified and changed many times.
- The creator of the crackers was sure carnal desires lead to such diseases as insanity, spinal diseases, tuberculosis, epilepsy, headaches, and indigestion;
- In 1898, the National Biscuit Company, now known as Nabisco, appeared, and in 1925 began producing Honey Grahams, renamed Honey Maid in 1976;
- Honey Maid added cinnamon in 1986, and in 1995, Honey Maid with a low fat content was added.
How to take part
The best way to celebrate is with Graham Crackers. Today there are a lot of interesting recipes based on them: crushed crackers mixed with butter are used as the crust for pies, crackers are eaten with yogurt and fruits in a parfait, and sandwiches are also made, where ice cream, nut butter, and fresh fruit are placed between two crackers.
