Nelson Mandela International Day

International Nelson Mandela Day is dedicated to a man who spent his life fighting for the freedom of his people and for social justice. Nelson Mandela, a remarkable leader, became South Africa’s first Black president after years of imprisonment and resistance. This day, observed every year on his birthday, was established by the United Nations to honor his legacy.

History

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918. As a child, he listened to powerful stories about his ancestors who fought bravely for their freedom—stories that inspired his lifelong mission. At the age of twelve, Mandela decided to dedicate his life to this cause. He was expelled from college for joining a student protest, and fled to Johannesburg to avoid an arranged marriage. There, he completed his higher education and began working as a mine security guard.

In the mid-20th century, Mandela joined the African National Congress, leading peaceful demonstrations and eventually organizing armed resistance against South Africa’s apartheid regime. For this, he was imprisoned for 27 years. Following his release, Mandela played a critical role in ending apartheid and building a new, democratic South Africa.

In 1994, Nelson Mandela was elected president, becoming a global symbol of peace and reconciliation. The first Nelson Mandela International Day was observed in 2009.
