National Women Physicians Day

National Women Physicians Day is an annual American observance dedicated to honoring all women working in medicine and healthcare. The holiday is celebrated on February 3.

History

The issue of equality between men and women has been present throughout history, and women have often faced discrimination and limited rights. The medical field was no exception. In the 19th century, it was extremely difficult for women to receive a medical education, as they were often criticized and even persecuted for pursuing careers as physicians.

The first medical school for women in the United States was the Boston Female Medical School, though it operated only briefly. The Female Medical College of Pennsylvania, founded in 1850, became far more successful and played a key role in the history of women in medicine.

Elizabeth Blackwell, originally from England, became the first woman to graduate from medical school in 1849. After earning her degree, she became a respected physician and was sought after by patients from different states. She worked tirelessly to promote women’s advancement in medicine and helped break down the barriers that kept women from becoming doctors.

National Women Physicians Day was established in 2016, thanks to the Physician Moms Group. The holiday is meant to recognize the achievements of women doctors and to promote equality in the healthcare field.

Interesting Facts

  • Today, women make up the majority of medical students in the United States. Recent statistics show the percentage is about 65% women to 35% men.
  • Margaret Ann Bulkley, who practiced medicine under the name James Barry, was the first female surgeon. She served as a military surgeon in South Africa and is believed to be among the first doctors to perform a successful Caesarean section in the early 19th century. Her true identity remained a secret until after her death.
