National Violin Day is dedicated to the wonderful musical instrument that has the power to touch the soul, stir hidden corners of the heart, and bring us incredible melodies. It’s no coincidence that the violin leads the orchestra!
History
Scientists believe the violin originated in Italy in the 16th century. Although none of those early instruments survive, texts and paintings confirm its emerging form. Gasparo da Salo, a master luthier, raised violin making to new heights of craftsmanship.
Surprisingly, the violin was first associated with street musicians. No one imagined it would become popular among nobility and conquer the world. In 1560, French craftsmen received an order for 24 instruments from King Charles IX. One of those violins survives today as the oldest playable violin on the planet.
