Not talking about Jurassic Park film characters, but real creatures that lived on the planet millions of years ago when the environment looked very different, National Velociraptor Awareness Day is celebrated on April 18.
History
Velociraptors lived on Earth 70 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous period. They stood about 7 feet tall, had bodies covered in feathers, and possessed 3-inch-long claws and sharp teeth that helped them hunt by inflicting fatal wounds on their prey.
Interesting Facts
The term “Velociraptor” was coined by H. Osborn, who was the head of the American Museum of Natural History in the early 20th century. Despite their reputation, velociraptors were not particularly fast, but their main advantage was their dagger-like claws.
- The real appearance of velociraptors does not match how they were portrayed in Steven Spielberg’s film. They did not have scales and were not cold-blooded reptiles; instead, they resembled very large birds, like giant chickens.
- Velociraptors are recognized as intelligent creatures, with a higher level of intelligence compared to other dinosaurs.
To celebrate this holiday, it’s best not to act like a velociraptor. Instead, find good company, visit a Natural History Museum, or rewatch Spielberg’s legendary masterpiece.
