National Teacher Day in the United States is a celebration of all educators, both current and past, who have made significant contributions to the development of education. This holiday is part of a week dedicated to honoring teachers.
History
The initiator of National Teacher Day was Matthew White Woodridge, a teacher from Arkansas. He wrote to various politicians, including Eleanor Roosevelt, asking for their support in establishing a national holiday for teachers.
Eleanor Roosevelt made several attempts to persuade Congress to establish the holiday. After 30 years of effort, a proclamation was finally made, and March 7, 1980, was declared National Teacher Day. However, the idea of an annual celebration was not immediately adopted.
Despite this, the National Education Association continued to celebrate the day each year. In 1985, the date was officially changed, and National Teacher Day was moved to the Tuesday of the first full week of May.
