National School Nurse Day

National School Nurse Day recognizes the work of school nurses and their role in supporting student health and safety. School nurses provide daily care, respond to emergencies, and help manage chronic conditions, contributing to a stable and supportive learning environment. The observance offers an opportunity to acknowledge their professionalism and dedication.

History of National School Nurse Day

The practice of school nursing can be traced back to the late 19th century. In 1873, citywide school health inspections were introduced in Brussels. In the United States, the first official school nurse position was established in 1902 in New York City, when Lina Rogers was appointed to improve student health outcomes. Her work contributed to a noticeable reduction in the spread of infectious diseases among schoolchildren.

National School Nurse Day was proclaimed in 1974. Earlier efforts to formalize the profession included the creation of the Department of School Nurses in 1968. Over time, educational and health organizations began using this observance to highlight the importance of school nurses and their contribution to child well-being.

How National School Nurse Day Is Observed

National School Nurse Day is commonly observed through expressions of appreciation within school communities. Schools may acknowledge their nurses through small events, messages of thanks, or recognition during assemblies. Families and students often participate by offering cards, notes, or simple gestures of gratitude.

The day also serves as an opportunity to recognize the broader role school nurses play in public health, prevention, and student support throughout the academic year.
