History
School nursing began in 1873 in Brussels, where city-wide school health inspections were held. The first official school nurse position was created in 1902 in New York City, with Lina Rogers appointed to the post. Thanks to her efforts, the spread of infectious diseases in the city decreased significantly.
National School Nurse Day was proclaimed in 1974. Prior to this, the Department of School Nurses was established in 1968. With the creation of this national holiday, organizations like the National Education Association expressed their recognition of these essential medical professionals, urging all citizens to thank school nurses for their vital contributions to children’s well-being.
How to Take Part
The main goal is to show respect and gratitude to school nurses. Schools often organize conferences, exhibitions, and special events, such as holiday concerts, to celebrate. Children and their parents also participate, presenting small gifts and offering words of thanks to their beloved school nurses.
