History

This culinary masterpiece appeared two centuries ago and bears the name of its creator. Researchers have found many old cookbooks containing recipes for similar cakes, but the familiar Sacher-Torte appeared later, quite by accident! In 1832, Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich, an Austrian diplomat and acting foreign minister, ordered his chefs to create a unique dessert that would be impressive enough to serve at a dinner party. The head chef fell ill, so the task fell on the shoulders of the young and inexperienced Franz Sacher. As a result, he managed to create the dessert, but it did not make a significant impact at the time. Sacher later honed his skills and, in 1848, returned to Vienna, eventually leaving the culinary field. The forgotten recipe for the cake was revived by his son, Eduard, who worked at the Demel confectionery. He prepared the delicacy, which brought joy to many guests! Today, the authentic Sacher-Torte can only be tasted in Vienna, although many countries have created their own versions.

• Eduard opened the Sacher Hotel, which still welcomes guests today and is one of the most upscale hotels.
• There were many scandals and litigations surrounding the cake, as the owners of Demel sought to obtain the rights to the recipe. In the end, they succeeded differently – Eduard sold the rights himself in 1934 due to bankruptcy.
• More than 300,000 cakes are produced annually at the hotel, and other sweets are also produced there.
