National Peaches and Cream Day celebrates a sweet and refreshing dessert. It is especially beloved by residents of the southern United States. However, the delightful taste and numerous health benefits of peaches (they are low in calories and rich in vitamins C, B3, B5, and E, which boost immunity and promote weight loss) have made this combination popular worldwide.
History
This dessert would not exist without peaches. They were introduced to America in the 16th century, reportedly by Spanish monks. It is also documented that peaches were cultivated on Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello estate in Virginia.
The prototype of the famous dessert was created by the French chef Auguste Escoffier, who worked at the Savoy Hotel in London. In 1897, Australian soprano Nellie Melba toured London. Protecting her vocal cords, she avoided ice cream, so Escoffier crafted the Peach Melba dessert especially for her. It featured peach halves, a small portion of vanilla ice cream, and sweetened raspberry puree.
Interesting Facts
This popular dessert has even inspired musical works. For instance, in 2015, Snoop Dogg released a single titled “Peaches N Cream,” featuring Pharrell Williams and Charlie Wilson. It was the lead track on his 13th album, “Bush.”
