National Good Samaritan Day is an American holiday celebrating selfless acts of kindness. It is inspired by the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan and encourages people to help others without expecting anything in return. The holiday is observed annually on March 13.
History
One of the tragedies believed to have influenced the creation of National Good Samaritan Day is the 1964 murder of Catherine Susan Genovese in New York. She was attacked near her home, and although several residents reportedly heard or witnessed parts of the incident, no one intervened. Many believe that if someone had helped, Catherine might have survived.
The holiday also draws meaning from the well known parable taught by Jesus. In the story, a Jewish man was robbed, beaten, and left on the roadside. A fellow Jew passed by but did not offer help. A priest followed but, due to prejudice, also did nothing. Finally, a Samaritan approached. Despite longstanding enmity between Jews and Samaritans, he chose compassion. He treated the man’s wounds and ensured he received care.
National Good Samaritan Day therefore promotes helping others regardless of personal beliefs, stereotypes, or differences. The message is simple: all people deserve compassion, and you should not ignore someone who needs help when you are able to offer it.
Interesting Facts
- The parable has inspired many works of art, including the 1592 painting Good Samaritan by Italian artist Jacopo Bassano.
- Psychologists note that performing kind acts boosts the production of dopamine, known as the “happiness hormone,” which reduces stress and improves mood.
