Levi Strauss Day is an annual American holiday celebrating the iconic jeans brand and its founders. Thanks to the vision and partnership of two innovative men, we can all enjoy comfortable, durable, and stylish denim. The holiday is observed every year on February 26.
History
Levi Strauss Day is celebrated on the birthday of Levi Strauss, the legendary entrepreneur who helped bring blue jeans to the world. Born in Germany, Strauss moved with his family to New York, where he and his brothers were involved in the wholesale haberdashery business.
In 1853, Levi Strauss moved to San Francisco and founded Levi Strauss & Co. Initially, he sold clothing, accessories, and even tents. One of his frequent customers was Jacob W. Davis, a tailor. Davis suggested they collaborate after being asked to create sturdy pants for a woman’s husband who worked at a sawmill. In 1871, Davis crafted the first copper-riveted, reinforced denim pants using fabric from Strauss’s store.
The design quickly became popular, and Levi Strauss supported Davis in patenting the invention in 1873. Together, they launched the mass production of blue jeans, revolutionizing workwear and eventually shaping casual fashion around the world.
