History

I Love Yarn Day was first founded in 2011 by a craft yarn organization and a team of craft professionals. The purpose of this special day is to bring together everyone involved in the world of crafting—from ordinary people to sales representatives and retailers—to show the world the amazing products that can be made with yarn. The organizers of I Love Yarn Day hope that as many people as possible will learn about the hobby and join the crafting community.

The very first traces of linen fibers and yarn date back to around 7,000 years ago. Archaeologists have discovered evidence of yarn in America that dates back to 500 BC. Until 1300 AD, yarn was mainly spun on a spindle, with stories and fairy tales depicting women engaging in this form of needlework. The spinning wheel, invented in the 13th century, revolutionized the process and is still used today.
