National Nurses Day in the USA is annual holiday. It marks the beginning of National Nurses Week in the United States. And this is one of the largest events in the American healthcare system.

History

National Nurses Day is celebrated on May 6th. This date was chosen in honor of Florence Nightingale, the British sister of mercy. She was one of the founders of the Sister of Mercy Service.

National Nurses Day was established in 1953. This holiday’s initiator was Dorothy Sutherland, an employee of the US Health Department, who sent a letter to the president with a request to hold celebration dedicated to nurses. Holiday was organized and held, but there wasn’t official announcement about its annual holding. Following years, people celebrated anyway May 6 as Nurses Day. By the way, the first National Nurses Week was held in 1974.
