DNA Day is a worldwide holiday dedicated to DNA, celebrated annually on April 25. This day commemorates the history of DNA discovery and brings together geneticists and doctors who study DNA to understand diseases and develop effective treatments.
History
The history of DNA Day dates back to 2003, when the major research project “Human Genome” was completed, involving scientists from around the world. The primary goal was to study the DNA chain and determine the complete set of human genes. Its completion was celebrated by the U.S. government, which provided significant funding for the project. In recognition of this historic achievement in science, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives established DNA Day.
The date of the celebration, April 25, also commemorates the publication of the groundbreaking work by J.D. Watson in 1953 in the journal Nature. Watson presented the DNA molecule in the form of a double helix, a representation that has been widely accepted and remains unchanged for decades.
Interesting Facts
- During a bone marrow transplant, the recipient’s blood will also contain the donor’s DNA.
- DNA is damaged hundreds of thousands of times every day, but thanks to a sophisticated repair system, a person does not develop cancer or acquire various mutations.
- The closest relative to humans in terms of DNA similarity are chimpanzees and other great apes, sharing about 95% of their DNA with us. Interestingly, humans share 50% of their genes with bananas.
