Cookie Monster Day is a holiday dedicated to a character who has had a major impact on many generations of Americans. Surely you know all the inhabitants of Sesame Street – this is Cookie Monster, Elmo, Grumpy Oscar, Big Bird. But today we are talking about only one character – Cookie Monster, who cannot live without his favorite chocolate chip cookie. But if there is no treat, the monster is able to eat everything that is nearby.
Why is the holiday celebrated on November 2nd? It was on this day in 1969 that Cookie Monster, created by Jim Henson, was first introduced. But few people know that this character’s television career began in 1966 – he was used in an advertisement for General Mills snacks, although the video did not air. In 1967, the monster was shown in an IBM training video about a self-destructing coffee break machine. Later, the prototype fairy-tale monster appeared in several commercials for the Munchos potato snack. It would seem that the character could continue to build an advertising career, but the Sesame Street project appeared.
- It is noteworthy that the character of the monster appeared in the series without a specific role, moreover, he did not have a name. Only in the second season did the character get his name and become a beloved hero.
- The characteristics of the monster are bulging eyes, a funny laugh, the phrase: “I want cookies!”, A good appetite.
- To prevent young viewers from thinking that the character is promoting unhealthy eating, the authors came up with a song for him about the principles of proper nutrition.
- Until 2001, the character was played by Frank Oz. After 2001, most of the characters were played by David Rudman.
