Cookie Monster Day

Cookie Monster Day is a holiday celebrating the beloved blue character who has delighted generations of Americans. You probably know the residents of Sesame Street—Cookie Monster, Elmo, Oscar the Grouch, and Big Bird—but today the spotlight is on Cookie Monster, the lovable creature who can’t live without his favorite chocolate chip cookies. If there are no cookies nearby, though, he’s known to munch on just about anything!

History

Cookie Monster Day is celebrated on November 2, marking the anniversary of Cookie Monster’s first appearance on Sesame Street in 1969. Originally created by Jim Henson, the character debuted without a specific name or role. It wasn’t until the second season that he became known as Cookie Monster and found his place in the show’s lineup.

Few realize Cookie Monster’s TV career began in 1966 with an unaired General Mills snack commercial. In 1967, the monster appeared in an IBM training video about a self-destructing coffee machine, and then in several commercials for Munchos potato snacks. While he could have continued in advertising, his true fame began with the launch of Sesame Street.

Interesting Facts
