Blue Monday is considered the saddest day in January. It is every third Monday in January. There is a strong opinion that this day is the most dull and sad. Why is that? Let’s talk about it below.
History
The history of Blue Monday dates back to 2005. It was during a PR campaign by the Sky Travel travel company that the formula of psychologist Cliff Arnall was presented. He proposed a day when people are in the worst mood and feel down and sad.
When developing the formula, the psychologist took into account the average annual indicators of atmospheric pressure, precipitation, temperature, the financial condition of people after the holidays, and many other factors. As a result, he concluded that most people feel worst on the third Monday of January. This version was not accepted by most scientists. Arnall’s colleague stated that a one-day depression is impossible.
The logic and correctness of the statement were not paid much attention to, and pharmaceutical companies actively promoted various drugs that improve mood and provide energy on that day.
Arnall later admitted that this was a mistake and apologized to his audience and patients. However, the association of a bad mood and sadness with the term Blue Monday has remained.
