Shopping Cart Day

Shopping Cart Day is an American holiday dedicated to shopping carts. It is a very handy invention, especially when you need to buy a lot of goods. Shopping carts always need to be carried and there is not much space in them. Carts are appreciated by the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities. The holiday is celebrated annually on June 4.

History

The history of Shopping Cart Day is unknown. The first cart sample appeared in 1937. It was invented by entrepreneur S. Goldman, who had his own chain of supermarkets in the USA. Essentially, he took the wire baskets then used in stores and attached a platform with wheels to it, resulting in a peculiar cart.

Over the decades, the cart has taken on a modern look. It is essentially a large basket at the optimum height, which is mounted on a chassis. It’s comfortable and easy to operate, and it can hold a lot of groceries and various things that you decide to indulge in while shopping.

Interesting facts

  • In the early years, the basket was unpopular because men considered it a purely feminine invention, and women found it to be similar to a baby carriage and did not want to use it.
  • The classic version of the cart known today was also designed by Goldman, but much later, in 1960.
  • In 2004, the British company Tesco introduced a cart with adjustable wheel resistance. It also acted as an exercise machine, since it required the use of force to push it. In about a half-hour walk through a supermarket, it was possible to burn a little more than 200 kcal.

How to celebrate

Visit supermarkets for shopping and be sure to use shopping carts. You can test how much more shopping you can fit in the cart than in the basket.  You can also team up with other people and race the shopping carts. It’s a lot of fun!

Tell about the holiday on social networks. Ask users, how often do they use shopping carts in supermarkets?
