Salvation Army Founders’ Day

Salvation Army Founders Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to the Salvation Army. Today it is a large-scale Christian organization, whose activities are aimed at helping people in need and is engaged in charity. The holiday is celebrated on April 10.

History

The story of Salvation Army Founders Day is tightly connected to a man named William Booth. The boy’s childhood in Nottingham was spent in difficult circumstances due to a difficult financial situation in his family. At the age of 15, he became interested in religion, honed his skills in writing and oratory, and became a local preacher. After his studies he moonlighted for a moneylender, and in 1851 he joined the Methodist Reformed Church.

In 1855 Booth took Catherine Mafford as his wife, and 10 years later, together they organized the Christian Mission, which in 1878 received its present name, the Salvation Army. Anyone can count on help, regardless of worldview or religious preference. A great effort was made by Booth to eradicate discrimination in society.

The number of members now exceeds 1.5 million worldwide.

Interesting facts

  • There is a reason the organization has the word “Army” in its name: the members of the organization are given military ranks from the officer ranks. The officers’ shoulder straps have a silver “S” on them.
  • Under the control of the Christian organization there are charity stores, rehabilitation centers for adults (those treated for alcohol and drug addiction). There are also Hadley Farms in Essex, where unemployed men can work and learn the necessary skills. About 70% of them later find a job.
