Pathologists Assistant Day is an American professional holiday dedicated to pathology assistants. These professionals examine laboratory specimens, assist with body examinations and autopsies, complete documentation, and more. The holiday is celebrated each year on April 14 to thank pathology assistants for their work.
History
The history of Pathologists Assistant Day has a long history. The first event that gave impetus to the subsequent development of pathologists occurred in 1922. At that time, the A.S.C.P. was founded in Chicago. Its main activities included training people with subsequent certification and information activities to attract more people to them. That’s when the first assistant pathologists began to appear, assisting certified specialists in their arduous work of examining the body, finding causes of death, examining lab specimens obtained, and more.
The founders of the A.S.C.P. created the American Association of Pathologists Assistants (A.A.P.A.) on April 14, 1972, to promote the profession by training new personnel who could later become certified as pathologists and work in higher positions.
Interesting facts
- Today the A.A.P.A. includes about 2,000 members.
