National Whipped Cream Day celebrates one of the world’s most universally loved inventions! It’s hard to imagine desserts, pastries, or drinks without this fluffy, sweet topping. Every family has a special treat made better with whipped cream—on this day, everyone gathers around the table, asking for an extra dollop.
History
Whipped cream was invented more recently than many people think—sometime in the 17th century. French cook François Vatel, a courtier of a relative of King Louis XIV, created it while preparing for a royal visit. Vatel experimented with whipping cream until it formed a stable, airy texture. The king was so impressed, he extended his stay to try more dishes and invited Vatel to his own palace—a remarkable honor.
Sadly, the story ends on a tragic note: waiting for a late fish delivery for the royal table, Vatel became distraught and took his own life, believing he had failed.
The holiday is also connected to Aaron “Bunny” Lapin, an American who, in 1946, had a brilliant idea: he filled an aerosol can with cream and nitrous oxide, inventing “Reddi-wip.” Thanks to Lapin, whipped cream became easy and convenient for everyone to enjoy at home.
