Not everyone in America knows about National Science Fiction Day. Let’s just say it’s celebrated by a select group of enthusiasts who are passionate about science fiction books, films, and comics. Sometimes, these fans are so immersed in their favorite stories that it’s hard to tear them away from reading or watching. Are you one of them?
History
The date was not chosen at random—January 2 is the birthday of Isaac Asimov, one of the most influential science fiction writers of all time. Although born in Russia, he dedicated his life to science and literature in America. His works have been translated into nearly every language in the world. Asimov wrote hundreds of books, an autobiography, and contributed to periodicals. His boundless creativity and productivity are legendary among writers.
Sadly, Asimov passed away in 1992. During a heart operation, he contracted HIV from a blood transfusion, which was discovered later when his health declined further.
National Science Fiction Day is not an official federal holiday, but it’s recognized by major organizations like Scholastic Corporation and Hallmark Channel. Maybe one day it will become official, but for now, fans are happy to celebrate and spread the word.
