National Dog Day

National Dog Day is dedicated to celebrating all dogs—purebred and mixed breeds, whether living in families or serving in important roles. Dogs enrich our lives as friends and companions, teaching children empathy and compassion. Specially trained dogs serve as bodyguards, work in law enforcement, improve the lives of people with disabilities, and search for drugs or explosives. They are vital in finding victims of natural disasters and terrorist attacks. The contribution of dogs to our society is truly invaluable.

History

National Dog Day was founded by Colleen Paige, a pet expert, animal welfare advocate, and professional dog trainer. The date, August 26th, was chosen in honor of the day Colleen adopted her first dog—a Sheltie—from a shelter. Since its inception in 2004, National Dog Day has grown in popularity in the United States and worldwide.

Interesting Facts

One of the oldest recorded stories of canine heroism is the Welsh legend of Gelert, the loyal Irish wolfhound of Prince Llywelyn.
