Levi Strauss Day is an annual American holiday dedicated to the legendary jeans company. Thanks to the efforts of two people, today we can wear these comfortable and stylish clothes. The holiday is on February 26.
History
The establishment of Levi Strauss Day allows us to commemorate the company, thanks to which each of us has a few pairs of jeans in our closet. Levi Strauss’s date of birth was chosen as the day of celebration. He has German roots, but as an adult, he moved with his family to New York. Levi and his brothers traded in haberdashery on a wholesale scale in the city.
In 1853, Levi obtained a U.S. passport and decided to establish his own business in San Francisco. His company was called Levi Strauss & Co. In the beginning, there were no serious differences from the last job – the man sold various clothes, accessories, and other things. Later, he started selling tents.
A frequent customer of Levi’s store was a tailor named Jacob W. Davis. Davis offered to collaborate, which resulted in the birth of blue jeans. A woman acquaintance asked Davis to design comfortable and, most importantly, hard-wearing pants for her husband, who worked in a sawmill. As a result, in 1871 the first copper-riveted reinforced denim jeans were made from denim purchased at Strauss’ store.
The demand for jeans was enormous! Levi Strauss financially supported his partner and helped patent his invention in 1873. It turned out to be a large-scale production of blue jeans, and Levi and Jacob became strong partners.
Interesting facts

- It wasn’t until 1922 that the company started making jeans with belt loops, and the zipper on the fly came in 1954.
