On the first Saturday of July, the International Day of Cooperatives is observed, highlighting the role of cooperatives in social, economic, and cultural development, as well as in achieving the goals of UN social policy. The purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about cooperatives and promote international economic solidarity, equality, and efficiency. Each year, the Director-General of the International Labor Organization (ILO) delivers a speech to mark the occasion.
History
Cooperatives are associations and enterprises through which people improve their lives while contributing to the economy, culture, politics, and social development of society. For many years, these associations have played a crucial role in reducing poverty and influencing national and international policies. Typically, cooperatives are people-oriented rather than profit-driven, operating with strong ethical and fair principles in matters of capital distribution.
The International Day of Cooperatives was established by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the United Nations General Assembly in 1992. The celebration date was chosen to coincide with the earlier International Cooperative Day, which had been observed by the ICA since 1923.
