On July 2, World Sports Journalists Day celebrates the work of sports journalists. Every day, they help millions of people around the world get the latest information on different sports. Sports correspondents have a common association to uphold the standards of their profession, the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).
History
AIPS established World Sports Journalists Day as a global professional holiday in 1994 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the association’s founding. This day encourages columnists, correspondents, and journalists from the world of sports to strive for excellence in their work and set an example to the world through their own efforts.
The origins of sports journalism began in the 1800s when much of the upper class entered the news business and sports columns emerged. Later, as sports became more popular among the middle and lower classes, news articles and reports about sports became widely distributed and in demand.
