National Macaroni Day

July 7

National Macaroni Day - July 7

Pasta lovers celebrate National Macaroni Day on July 7, because this dish has become one of the most popular in the United States. It is believed the name came from the type of dough used to make noodles. Today, pasta is made in the form of shells, spirals, straight, and many other forms, and is used as an independent dish and as part of soups, casseroles, and salads.

History

Some researchers dispute the Italian origin of pasta, because certain historical records indicate people first started eating noodles in China. The International Pasta Organization traced the origin of the word ‘pasta’ and found the word has Greek roots. Previously, on the site of modern Naples, pasta was made from barley flour and water.

Pasta recipes are found in cookbooks from the 14th and 15th centuries, but it was much longer then. Different ways of preparing pasta corresponded to the regions where they were prepared. At the end of the 19th century, the US ambassador to France, Thomas Jefferson, first tried pasta in Naples, after which he brought a special pasta machine to the United States. That is when the American love for pasta began, which has survived to this day.

Interesting facts

  • The first published record of macaroni and cheese was in Maestro Martino’s cookbook Libro de Arte Coquinaria, dated 1465;
  • The first commercial production of pasta began in Switzerland in 1872;
  • In 1904, the National Pasta Association was formed. Today it is called the National Pasta and Noodle Association of America.

How to take part

The best way to celebrate National Day is with a pasta-related culinary experiment: you can try making a new version of soup, a hot dish, casserole, or salad.
