World Bartender Day is a worldwide celebration of bartenders. Without this profession, bars, clubs, pubs, and other establishments wouldn’t be able to operate. Bartenders masterfully mix ingredients into delicious cocktails. They can also pour a glass of beer, plain water, or brew tea/coffee on request. It is annually on February 24.
History
The purpose of World Bartender Day is to thank bartenders for their work and to show the importance of the profession in the service industry. It is believed that the profession of bartender appeared at the dawn of the Middle Ages. Back then, there were various taverns where a long table with a man standing behind it served drinks. He was usually the owner of the place as well. Guests could order drinks from him.
Around the 19th century, the profession of bartending acquired a higher status. Jerry Thomas made a great contribution to its development. This man is often referred to as “the father of American mixology.” During his time working in New York bars, he created a huge number of interesting cocktails, which are still very popular today. Thanks to Thomas, the book “The Bartender’s Handbook” was published, which contained dozens of cocktail recipes.
The demand for good bartenders in the United States fell during Prohibition. However, after the lifting of the ban on the production and distribution of alcohol, members of this profession quickly regained their place of honor in society. Today’s bartenders are talented and creative people who are masterful with tools for mixing cocktails and know all the recipes perfectly well.
