National Hot Tea Day is an American holiday dedicated to the joys of drinking hot tea. Celebrated annually on January 12, it honors one of the world’s oldest and most cherished beverages. Tea has been enjoyed since ancient China, where it was valued for its invigorating qualities and its ability to relieve fatigue and cleanse the body.
History
National Hot Tea Day was established by the U.S. Tea Council in 2016 to celebrate tea culture across the country.
According to legend, tea was discovered in 2737 BC when Emperor Shen Nong’s servant accidentally dropped tea leaves into boiling water. The resulting drink was so fragrant and flavorful that the emperor enjoyed it—and thus, tea spread across China.
Tea reached Europe much later. Records show the first shipments to Europe occurred in 1607, and by the 1650s, tea was served in London coffeehouses. Smuggling in the 18th century helped tea become widespread, and by the 19th century, it had become a daily staple for millions.
Interesting Facts
