National Hoagie Day

National Hoagie Day is a holiday for people who love good food but prefer not to spend too much time cooking. A hoagie can be a tasty alternative to burgers, chips, nuggets, and French fries.

History of National Hoagie Day

There are several stories about the origin of the hoagie. According to one version, Italian workers in Philadelphia brought a hearty lunch to work in the mid-20th century. Their meal resembled a large sandwich filled with meats, sauces, cheese, and herbs inside a long roll. This sandwich was allegedly linked to the name “Hog Island,” which later evolved into “hoagie.”

Another version places the hoagie’s roots in South Philadelphia in the early 20th century. In this story, meat and cheese were placed in an Italian roll and called a “hokie,” which may have been mispronounced over time as “hoagie,” becoming the name that stuck.

In 1992, the hoagie was officially recognized as the signature sandwich of Philadelphia.

How to Take Part in National Hoagie Day

Celebrating National Hoagie Day can be as simple as making and sharing sandwiches at home:

  1. Make a few hoagies and experiment with different breads, sauces, meats, and cheeses. Invite friends over and serve them as an easy meal or snack.
  2. Bring hoagies to work and compare different versions in a friendly tasting.
  3. Challenge yourself to make the biggest hoagie you can.
