Global Family Day

Global Family Day is a warm and heartfelt holiday celebrated every January 1. Most festivities take place in the United States, but it’s a great occasion everywhere—our families are true treasures that deserve appreciation.

History

In 1997, the UN General Assembly invited countries around the world to mark the first day of the new millennium as the Day of Peace. The organization encouraged dedicating the year 2000 to global culture and child safety, and 140 countries supported the idea. Over time, the holiday evolved into Global Family Day, since the original purpose aligned so closely with its new focus.

Activist and peace advocate Linda Grover played a key role in popularizing the date: she wrote the utopian novel Island, participated in events, launched projects, and even traveled to China to promote the message. However, the holiday never became truly global, remaining best known in the United States.
