National Chimichanga Day

National Chimichanga Day celebrates one of the most popular and delicious dishes on the Mexican menu. The chimichanga first appeared at Macayo’s Mexican Food in 1946. Around the same time, a well-known Mexican restaurant called Chimichanga opened—its name meaning “a little thing” in Mexican Spanish. Since then, Macayo’s has held an annual party with special events and prizes every September 26.

History

Macayo’s Restaurant opened more than 75 years ago and quickly became a local favorite for original Mexican cuisine based on family recipes. Legend has it that the chimichanga was born by accident, when a burrito was dropped into a deep fryer, creating a crispy, savory new treat. Today, chimichangas are typically served with sour cream, relleno sauce, and fresh pico de gallo.

Interesting Details

  • Over the years, the dish has evolved with new ingredients such as different meats and cheeses.
  • Mini chimis, or bite-sized chimichangas, were later added to the menu.
  • Macayo’s has had many famous visitors—Barack Obama celebrated his daughter Malia’s birthday there in 2009.

How to Take Part

Enjoy a hearty chimichanga at Macayo’s Restaurant or any local spot—chimichangas are so popular, they’re easy to find. Join in Macayo’s annual celebrations on September 26.
