World Ozone Day

World Ozone Day is dedicated to the protection of the Earth’s ozone layer, celebrated on September 16th, officially approved by the UN General Assembly in 1994.

History

The ozone layer is a thin layer of gas. Without it, as well as without the atmosphere, life on the planet is impossible. This protective gaseous layer absorbs excess solar radiation, thereby maintaining the optimum temperature regime of the Earth at which life is possible.

During active industrialization, absolutely no attention was paid to ecology, as the main goal was developing industry. Research began only in the second half of the 20th century. In the 70s, it was found that the ozone layer had become much thinner. The so-called ozone holes were formed, which were over the south and north poles. The reason was the production gases emitted into the atmosphere, especially various refrigerants that were used in refrigerators and industrial cooling systems.

In 1985, a convention was signed, according to which 28 countries would participate in the search for a solution to the ozone layer problem. Three years later, a list of hazardous industrial substances was presented. Their rejection made it possible to prevent destructive processes in the future.

Interesting facts

  • Compressed to sea-level pressures, the ozone layer would only be a few centimeters thick.
  • Ozone has a scent we associate with freshness. You can smell it after a thunderstorm.
  • If the ozone layer suddenly disappeared, humanity would die out from massive occurrences of cancer, provoked by excessive solar UV radiation.

How to take part

Celebrating World Ozone Day is a great opportunity to learn more about the planet’s ozone layer. Attend lectures, which are often held at universities. You can also help environmental organizations by donating to them.

Create a social media post about this holiday. Emphasize the importance of preserving the ecology of our planet, because the Earth is a common home for all people.
