World Autism Awareness Day - April 2

World Autism Awareness Day is observed annually on April 2nd. The main purpose of this date is to emphasize the need to help people with such a diagnosis and improve their standard of living. It is a special kind of developmental disorder, neurological by nature.

Autism affects the way a person behaves, percepts information and how he/she is able to focus attention on something. Approximately one in 59 newborns today has signs of an autism and the quantity of such children continues to grow.

A child with autism can be borne by any mother of any age, regardless of her race, nationality and other features of the parents.

History

This Day was established by UN General Assembly in order to draw people’s attention around the world to such a massive problem. Seminars on autism issues take place every year all over the world as well as consultations, conferences, etc. Their aim is to explain how to help people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) live in our society.

These activities are of great humanistic value, allowing people with autism to become stronger and more confident in the environment that our world has to offer. It is important to remember that these people, as a rule, are very intellectually gifted, but they do not know how to correctly understand the feelings of another person, they do not recognize some of the hidden meanings encrypted in speech, so they really need help.

Fan facts

  • This day one may think about whether there are people with autism spectrum disorder among acquaintances and whether it’s possible to help them with something – for example to present a book according to interests or acquaint the parents and relatives of this person with the latest research on autism.
  • In addition, on this day one may take part in the «Light it up in blue» campaign, which is held annually in all the countries. The hosts at such events tell the participants what autism is, its essence and external manifestations of the syndrome. During the event everybody go outside with blue balloons and release them into the sky. In other countries some participants wave blue ribbons or light blue lanterns. The point is that blue is a worldwide recognized color symbol for autism.
