National Trails Day
June 4, 2022
National Trails Day is a great holiday for anyone who loves hiking, preferring to enjoy the outdoors instead of sitting at home on the couch watching TV. This event unites all lovers of hiking and involves as many people as possible in this activity.
In early America, cars and pedestrians shared the roads. It was dangerous and uncomfortable. In 1968, US President Lyndon B. Johnson signed an executive order establishing separate trails for recreation and tourism. This law was significant for outdoor enthusiasts, who for several years sought the creation of separate routes and trails. The American Tourist Society took part in the routes’ development.
After 1968, some amendments and new routes and trails were added. This contributed to the development and popularization of tourism and outdoor activities among Americans. Every year, more tourist societies formed, with new members constantly joining. These societies created National Trails Day, celebrated on the first Saturday of June. It is customary to put on comfortable shoes and walk along a favorite or new route.
Here is what we found:
- The first National Trails Day was held in 1993.
