National Prairie Day

National Prairie Day is an American holiday dedicated to the prairie. These are unique ecosystems characteristic of the North American continent. They are essentially open areas with a high proportion of herbaceous plants and almost no trees. The prairie has long been an important area for farming and ranching. The holiday is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in June.

History

The history of National Prairie Day begins in 2016, when the holiday was established by the Missouri Prairie Foundation. The purpose of the celebration is to spread awareness of the features and importance of the prairie, and to promote the conservation and restoration of rangelands.

In relation to the entire continent, prairies occupy about 15% of its area. There are similar natural areas in South America, but there they are called pampas. Another analogue is the Asian steppes.

North American prairies are characterized by highly fertile soils and a great diversity of species (especially plants). This makes the prairie an excellent place for livestock and valuable crops.

Interesting facts

  • American bison and small rodents are some of the most common animals found on the American prairies.
  • The amount of rain needed in the summer on the North American prairies is provided by the air currents that bring rain clouds from the Atlantic Ocean.
  • Just over 20 pastures across North America are publicly owned.
