National Cheese Day
June 4, 2022
This delicious feast for gourmets takes place on June 4, when National Cheese Day is celebrated. This is not a day of cakes, pasta, and cheese-flavored crackers, but an event celebrating the taste of authentic cheese.
Cheese production is associated with the domestication of animals that give milk. There is documentary evidence cheese was made at the beginning of Chinese civilization and in Ancient Egypt. In the Middle Ages, Europe’s inhabitants created several varieties: Cheddar, Parmesan, Gouda. Large-scale production developed in 1815 in Switzerland. Cheese, like many popular products, was brought to the USA by Europeans who adopted and preserved the ancient traditions of cheese-making from their ancestors.
Mozzarella cheese appeared in the region near Naples. For long periods, this type of cheese was produced only in a certain location. Pasteurization was unknown, so it was impractical to transport milk over longer distances. Development of gentle cooling technologies contributed to the spread of mozzarella.
- There are 2 types of mozzarella is sold in the USA. Cheese with high moisture content and short shelf life is intended for domestic consumption, and cheese with low moisture and a long shelf life for export.
- Cheese is a significant ingredient in many dishes, and it is added to sauces, soups, side dishes, meat, deep-fried and served in grated form.
- There is cheese made without milk based on vegetable ingredients. This innovation is the result of experiments in the field of creating new culinary technologies.
The USA, Italy, Germany, and France are the world’s largest producers of cheese.
