Mother Goose Day - May 1

Every year on May 1, the United States celebrates Mother Goose Day. This is the name of a character who was considered the author of many folktales.

The History

The expression Mother Goose first appeared at the end of the 17th century. In 1697, a collection of fairy tales by Charles Perot, called Tales of Mother Goose, appeared on sale. It was a fictional character who was given the authorship of many popular stories, songs, and rhymes. In 1760, the next collection of children’s poems and songs, Melodies of Mother Goose, was published.

Mother Goose became a prototype, writing wonderful fairy tales, poems, and lullabies. This character was kind, sweet, and wise. She was loved by adults and children. In 1987, famous storyteller Gloria T. Delamare decided to start Mother Goose Day.
