Every year on May 1, the United States celebrates Mother Goose Day. This is the name of character who was considered the author of many folk tales.

History

The expression «Mother Goose» first appeared at the end of the 17th century. In 1697, a collection of fairy tales by Charles Perot, called «Tales of Mother Goose», appeared on sale. It was a fictional character who was given the authorship of many popular stories, songs, rhymes. In 1760, the next collection of children’s poems and songs, «Melodies of Mother Goose», was published.

Mother Goose become a prototype writing wonderful fairy tales, poems, lullabies. This character was kind, sweet, wise. She was loved by adults and children. In 1987, famous storyteller Gloria T. Delamare decided to found Mother Goose Day.

This holiday has a few interesting facts:

  1. Mother Goose Day is celebrated throughout the United States of America: preschools, schools, nursing homes, banks, manufacturers of various goods and other institutions.
  2. The collection «Tales of Mother Goose» included Puss in Boots, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard and other famous fairy tales. These are folk tales processed by Charles Perot.
  3. Modern historians have doubts that collections of poems and tales of mother goose included only folk art. There’s opinion some tales have real authors.
