Melanoma Monday - May

Melanoma Monday – this is an advertising campaign, the purpose of which is providing people with detailed information about what melanoma is and how to protection against it.

The History

Melanoma is a skin cancer, first mentioned in the 5th century BC. In the 18th century, Dr. John Hunter removed skin cancer with metastases, defining it as cancerous fungal growth. The doctor diagnosed the disease as melanoma.

During the 19th century, doctors made a lot of discoveries regarding melanoma, but no treatment was available. Since 1956, more information has emerged. Doctors made diagnoses faster, slowing down the progress of the disease. Also, health care workers could provide information on how to minimize melanoma formation risk.

The American Academy of Dermatology has chosen the first Monday of May for a massive advertising campaign to inform citizens about the risks and preventative measures.

Interesting Facts

The main factor influencing the formation of melanoma is ultraviolet light. Doctors have developed recommendations you can follow to minimize the risk of melanoma formation:

  2. In summer, wear a wide-brimmed hat.

  4. On a sunny day, try to stay in the shade.
